Biography

Derrick 'Dirck' Willemse Burkelo was born about 1683 in New Amersfort, Province of New York, the son of Willem Jansz (Lubberdinck) van Borkelo and Lijsbeth Jans. His father died around the time he was born, in November 1683.

He married Jannetie van Aartsdalen on 17 Sep 1709 in Flatbush. [1] [2] They had eight children together:

  1. Aeltie Barkelo (bp. 1 Oct 1710)[3]
  2. Elizabeth Barkelo (bp. 11 May 1712)[4]
  3. Willem Barkelo (bp. 16 Jan 1714/5)[5]

At the time of his marriage in 1709, he was recorded as living in Freehold, Monmouth, New Jersey, and he apparently lived there the rest of his life. His first child, Aeltie, was baptized there in 1710, as were his other seven children. On 13 May 1711, "Derek Barkelo and wife Janeke" were received as members at the Dutch Reformed Church of Freehold and Middletown in New Jersey. "Derick Berkelo served as a deacon of this church starting on 10 Sep 1727. [12] On 23 Aug 1731 the church members signed a pledge, and Derck Borcaloo was listed with the consistory. His wife signed as a member in Friholt (Freehold). [13] He (Dirk Borkelo) was listed as an elder of the church on 23 Jul 1735. [14]

Dirck was a weaver by trade. [15]

He died sometime between 16 Jul 1744 when he wrote his will, and 16 Aug 1744 when the will was proved.
