Biography

Joan was a Friend (Quaker)
Joan (Burgess) Moon was a part of William Penn's Pennsylvania Settlers community.

This is the profile for the Joan Burgess that married James Moon. They came from England and settled in Pennsylvania in the late 1600s.

Davis, in his History of Bucks County, PA[1] tells us that James Moon and Joan Burgess were married near Bristol, England. They settled with their children on land that James bought in 1688 in Falls Township Pennsylvania. James' Will names 6 children: Sarah, James, Jonas, Jasper, Mary and Roger. Davis provides no information on the births of either James or Joan but does provide some information on their children:

  1. Sarah Moon
  2. James Moon married (1)Mary WIilsford 1696, (2) Agnes Priestly 1714. Died 1755.
  3. Jonas Moon b 1671 married Alice Chissum about 1707
  4. Jasper Moon married Susanna.
  5. Mary Moon
  6. Roger Moon born about 1680, married Ann Nutt (of England) 1708 at the Falls Meeting of Friends. He stayed on the ancestral acres and died in 1759.

Joan resided with her son Roger at the homestead until her death, at nearly ninety, having survived her husband twenty-six years. She was an active member of Falls Monthly Meeting, and frequently preferred to walk to meeting when in advanced years.

Joan passed away in December 1739 at about the age of 90 in Falls, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.[2][3][4][5]

Research Notes

Search for Joan's Birth Family

Not daughter of Samuel Burges. While some believed she was the daughter of Samuel Burgess and his wife Eleanor, this is entirely without documentation and they have therefore been detached. In Davis History of Bucks County a Joan is not among the named children of Samuel Burgess.[1] Quakers Project via T Stanton. Currently known birth dates are also inconsistent with scenario.

Brother of Samuel Burges ?. Davis, when discussing the Burges family, [1] notes that the land on which James and Joan (Burges) Moon settled, was adjacent to the land on which Samuel Burges and his wife Eleanor settled. Davis then suggested that Samuel was probably Joan's brother. The birth and marriage records for Samuel and Eleanor have been found in Wilmslow, Cheshire. Samuel is the son of Edward Burgess. There are birth records for 10 of Edward's children. Joan is not among them. Searching for a birth record for Joan Burges in Cheshire in the appropriate period yielded Joane Burges b 1634 Prestbury, Cheshire, father Robert.

Sister of Sarah (Burgess) Hill ?. Joan's sister, Sarah Burgess, was the wife of James Hill of Burlington, N.J. Bristol, England, Quaker Records and the will of James Hill names "my brother-in-law James Moone" And from [1] James Moon purchased from James Hill 125 acres of land in Falls Township in 1688. There is a Sara Beckett or Burges born 1633 Prestbury, Cheshire, bur no father listed. (Index Prestbury begins image 199 on film, didn't find actual record. These are typed copy of records) More research is needed.

Legacy from family in England ?. Note: Joan Burgess, wife of James Moone, received a legacy from her parents or other relatives in England in 1695 an obtained a certificate from the Bucks County Court on December 11, 1695 to enable her toreceive it, the court entry of which is as follows: A certificate of Joan, the wife of James Moone, being alive signed in Court she being then there present. In current [July 2020] research with the Mercer Museum of the Bucks Historical Society the note below regarding "a legacy" from England is not supported by the actual court record found. Note: This research has been slowed by Covid, patience please.

Familysearch results. Searching for Joan Burges born 1633 to 1651 in England (consistent with Joan age 16-46 when children were born) yields: 1634 Surrey. 1634/5 Cheshire. 1634/5 Sussex. 1635 Middlesex. 1637 Sussex. 1637 Kent. 1638 London. 1638 Wiltshire. 1639 Devon. 1639 Kent. 1640 Somerset. 1642 Staffordshire. 1645 Sussex. 1645 Wiltshire. 1645 Gloucestershire. 1646 Devon. 1649 Devon, but died 5 days later. 1650 Devon.

Born near Bristol, where she was married? A record that supports that is Joane Burges christened 13 Mar 1645, Hanham and Oldland, Gloucester, England (about 4 miles from the center of Bristol), daughter of John Burges, and his wife Joane.[6]

Other Notes

She purchased a farm near the Delaware, two miles north of Yardleyville, since owned by Zachariah Betts.
She died at the home of her son, Roger, the old home plantation in Falls, the title of which has been transferred from James Jr. to his father and by the latter to Roger in 1706,

I have added the father of Samuel Burgess, Edward Burgess, as the uncertain father of Joan, consistent with Daviis thinking they were siblings. The records for Edward's children, indexed by familysearch in 2017 and 2018 do not include a daughter Joan. However, the links to the currently known children, have links to the film. And knowing what you are looking for, someone might find her there in an entry the indexers couldn't decipher. The records are for Wilmslow in Cheshire, and include 10 children for Edward.

Removed Samuel Burgess-1441 born 1645 as father of Joan. Joan is also probably not his sister since Joan born in Bristol, and Samuel-1441 born in Cheshire.

Burgess-1442 and Burgess-10062 do not represent the same person because: This is again rejected for the same reasons as before. The incorrect parentage on one profile needs to be corrected prior to the merge.

Samuel Burgess (Burgess-1441) could not be the father of Joan Burgess (Burgess-10062 or Burgess-1442 pending merge). He is only 4 years older than her. I propose Samuel Burgess 1623-1714 (https://www.geni.com/people/Samuel-Burgess/6000000002965145818).

The following is a post from FIND A GRAVE:

From a biographical sketch by Joan Case: On September 1, 1682 a band of about one hundred persons set sail from Deal, England on the "Welcome" with William Penn bound for his recently acquired province in the new land across the ocean, where they could worship in freedom. They reached Newcastle, on the Delaware river October 27, 1682, one-third fewer in number because of the ravages of smallpox on shipboard.

Among those who came to the new land were James and Joan Moon and their six children, Sarah, James, Jonas, Jasper, Mary and Roger. The family settled near Fallsington, in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, on a land grant given them by Penn. the original homesite is said to be a freight yard near Morrisville, Pennsylvania now.

From New England Families, Genealogical and Memorial, by William Richard Cutter (New York: Lewis historical publishing Company, 1915), p. 2158-59:

James Moone … married at Bristol, England, about 1663, Joan Burgess, and brought to America several children of nearly adult age. [They] appeared in Philadelphia, and located near the falls of the Delaware, in Bucks County. [James] purchased a tract of land in Falls township in 1695.

Joan Burgess, wife of James Moone, received a [family] legacy from England in 1695, and obtained a certificate from the Bucks County Court on December 11, of that year, to enable her to receive it. She survived her husband over a quarter of a century, dying December, 1739, in her ninetieth year, at the home of her son Roger, the old home plantation in Falls, the title of which had been transferred from James Jr. to his father and by the latter, in 1706, to Roger.

Children of James and Joan (Burgess) Moon were: Sarah, Jasper, James; Roger, Jonas, Mary.

Burgess-10062 and Burgess-1442 are not ready to be merged because: These profiles represent the same person. However, Burgess-1442 presently has Samuel attached as father who is likely her brother. Research with Bucks County is underway so let's leave this as unmerged match until the results of their research into the court records are completed as they may reveal additional information regarding her family and parentage. There are also duplicate profiles of a number of the children.

She is not named as a daughter in the will of the attached father.

Davis "History of Bucks County" says the Samuel attached here as her father is most probably her brother.

I am currently working with the research staff at Mercer Museum and Library & Fonthill Castle

operated by the Bucks County Historical Society to review all court records related to the legacy or other inheritance which is alluded to in what brief information on her is available. This may lead to information on her parentage. The research may take a couple of months.
