Stephen Edward Burcher was born on 8th May 1920 in Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia. He was the fourth of twelve children, and eldest son, of Harvey Burcher and Estelle Thomas. [1]

On 29th April 1940, Stephen enlisted in the Second Australian Imperial Force, his nation's all-volunteer expeditionary force for the Second World War. [2] Allocated to reinforcements for the 2/1st Infantry Battalion, 16th Brigade, 6th Division, he joined the unit in Egypt and saw action in both the highly successful Libya Campaign (Jan-Mar 1941) and the highly disastrous Greece-Crete Campaign (April-May 1941), and was in the garrison forces of Syria-Lebanon (July 1941-January 1942) and Ceylon (Mar-Jul 1942) before enjoying an ever-so-brief furlough home before the battalion deployed to Papua, and the infamous Kokoda Trail, from August that year. At Greece and Crete, the 6th Division was a formation of the New Zealand and Australian Corps, making Stephen an ANZAC.
Stephen Burcher died of wounds at Kokoda, Papua during the Second World War.
Stephen died of wounds on 27th October 1942. He was just 22 years of age. His remains lie in the Bomana War Cemetery, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. Stephen Edward Burcher's name is located at panel 28 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra, and on the Cenotaph in Vaucluse, New South Wales. [3] Following the war his family were issued his campain and service medals: 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, Pacific Star, War Medal 1939-1945 and Australia Service Medal 1939-1945.
