Biography

Lydia (Buckland) Lord was born about 1637 in Hingham, Plymouth Colony, daughter of William Buckland (~1609 - 1683) and Mary (Bosworth) Buckland (~1611 - 1687).[1] Estimates of 1650 would be too late as she was already had her first child in 1661.

Lydia's father, William Buckland, removed from Hingham, Massachusetts, where he had originally settled, to Rehoboth by 1656.

She married four times and had children with the first two husbands.[2]

Lydia married as his second wife,John Brown[3][2] (1630 - 1662) on 5 Nov 1659 in Rehoboth, Bristol, Massachusetts. John had a total of five children. It is uncertain if Joseph was from his first wife or from Lydia. John and Lydia had Nathaniel in 1661.[4]

  1. Joseph Brown (1658 - 1731)
  2. Nathaniel Brown (1661 - 1739).[4]

Lydia married William Lord (~1618 - 1678) on 3 Jun 1664 in Lyme, CT.[2] Their children were:[2]

  1. Benjamin Lord (1666 - 1713)
  2. Ensign James Lord (1668 - 1730)
  3. Samuel Lord (~1672 - 1701)
  4. Daniel Lord (~1673 - 1754)
  5. Hannah (Lord) Hodgkin (~1675 - 1727)
  6. Elizabeth (Lord) Smith (~1676 - 1736).

Clarke has a rather different list of children (and different order of birth):[3]

  1. Sarah
  2. Abigail
  3. Benjamin
  4. Dorothy
  5. Daniel
  6. James
  7. Samuel

WIlliam died in 1678. Lydia later married Thomas Dunk (~1648 - 1683) on 1 Oct 1678 in Saybrook, CT.

Lydia married Abraham Post (<1640 - <1691) in Mar 1685 in Rehoboth.[2] as his 2nd wife, after the death of Abraham's first wife in March 1683/4. [5] Their daughter was Hester Post (1672 - 1673).

Lydia died about 9 Sep 1699 in Saybrook aged ~62.[2]

Research Notes

Contradictory information is found about this person, birth between 1613 and 1632, birth in England, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Do not merge this profile with this Lydia Buckland until these conflicts are resolved. Lydia, the daughter of William Buckland is mentioned in the The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, 1620-33 as having married, "about 1655, John Brown, Jr." No birth date or place is indicated. It seems there were possibly two William Bucklands. Either of them might have married Mary Bosworth, and might or might not have sired our Lydia. [6]

Other unsourced reports have her death around 1669 and in 1679.

Hi Christopher,

I agree that Buckland-3560 and Buckland-4 need to be merged. First I hope to see Hester Post-3660 corrected, I think it would make the merge easier afterwards. (Please see my note on Post-3660, thank you.)

Buckland-3560 and Buckland-4 appear to represent the same person because: Clearly the same person. One record is much more complete and accurate than the other one. The current record shows that Abraham Post married two Lydia Bucklands - this makes no sense.

As Kay noted below, there is new information in "Early New England Families," where it states that Lydia Buckland was apparently born in New England 1637.

Thank you Terry Kraft for changing the death date on Lydia from 1669 to 1699.

Since she married her fourth and final husband after 1683, it makes sense that she did not died in 1669.

Buckland-751 and Buckland-4 appear to represent the same person because: Per April, seems reasonable to merge them now. Same name, spouse name, DOD and DOB. Some conflicting information but this should be dealt within body of bio.

It appears that some confusion in Great Migration over William Buckland is since corrected - see comments on William Buckland.

The identity of Lydia Buckland, daughter of William Buckland and Mary Bosworth is not in doubt, and it would be helpful to now merge Buckland-751 in Buckland-4.

Some confusion which has occurred because of the presence in New England of several different John Browne families is being untangled. The online edition of Great Migration: Immigrants to New England, 1634-1635, Volume I, A-B, contains corrections and comments (see page 456).

Other confusions are because of assumptions, such as William Buckland being buried at Hingham 1 Sept 1679, (see John Browne... (1919) by George Tilden Browne page 33) when William Buckland Sr. actually removed to Rehoboth (aha! so that is how Lydia met John) by 1656, and William Buckland died at Rehoboth 1 Sept 1683. It is corrected in Great Migration now, that William Buckland Sr. had a son William Buckland, etc etc.

Contradictory information is found about this person, birth between 1613 and 1632, birth in England, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Do not merge this profile until these conflicts are resolved. THB See Buckland-4.
