Mary Brundish Note the spelling "Brundish" by Anderson,[1][2] and Brundage by Doherty.[3]

Note: This profile previously reported a middle name, Elizabeth. Note the source given covers Joseph Purdy (d c. 1709) and his wife, Elizabeth.[4] Possibly the two, Francis and Joseph have been confounded. (It is more likely that the Elizabeth comes from the "Allied Families of Purdy..." book. See the profile of Francis Purdy I for comments on that book).

According to Thomas William Brundage,[5] Mary was b. 12/10/1628 at St-Mary-at-the-Elms, (Sometimes there is an "s" or Elm and sometimes not.) d. post 1710, at Rye, NY; m1. by 1645 Francis Purdy, b. 1610 in York, England; d. 1658 in Fairfield; m2 John Hoyt/Haight, b. 3/12/1614 County Dorset, England, d. 1684 Rye.

According to Thomas William Brundage, there were 5 Purdy children were as follows: John, Francis, Joseph, Daniel, and Mary. There were only 3 Hoyt children as a result of the union between Mary Brundage and John Hoyt, as follows: Rachel Hoyt, m. by 1684 John Horton; John Hoyt, b. 1664, d. 1723-26, Rye. m. Elizabeth Sherwood (7 Children); Simon Hoyt - prob d. w/o issue.

According to Perry Streeter,[5] Mary Brundish (John, Thomas) and Francis Purdy, who was b. abt. 1627 in England and d. 1658 at Fairfield, Fairfield Co., CT. She then m. 2nd John Hoyt/Hoit. He b. 2/12/1614 at York, England. d. 1684 at Rye, Westchester Co., NY (then Fairfield County, CT.) The 5 Purdy children were, as follows: John, Francis, Joseph, Daniel, and Mary. The 5 Hoyt/Hoit children were, as follows: Samuel, John Mary Rachel, and Simon. (It seems strange having two Johns and two Marys. It must have been confusing.)

Origin

Mary was born "say" 1629, the eldest child of John Brundage and Rachel Unknown.[2] According to Anderson, the family's origins in England are unknown.[2]

Doherty reports the that Mary's father immigrated from Ipswich, England.[3] He also reports the family lived initially at Salem, then to Wethersfield, and finally to Fairfield.[3] "McKenzie" was Doherty's "primary source."

Mary's baptism took place on 10 December 1628 at St. Mary At The Elms, Ipswich, Suffolk, England, Mary d. 9/15/1684 at Rye, Westchester County, NY, which at the time of Mary's death was Fairfield County, CT.) [6]

Immigration and Early Days

The Brundish family's arrived at Watertown in 1634 (date is estimated by John Brundish freemanship on 4 March 1634/5).[2] After a brief stay, they continued to Wethersfield, and John died there between May 1639 (date of unregistered deed) and 27 October 1639 (date of inventory).[2]

Mary's mother, Rachel Brundish, remarried perhaps on 5 August 1642 to Anthony Wilson.[2]

Marriages

Mary married twice:

  • She married, first, Francis Purdy who died in 1658 [FOOF 1:495-96].)[1][2]. No marriage record has been found; a marriage record compiled from secondary sources is on AmericanAncestors[7]. On John Brundish's inventory of 27 October 1639, and on a probate hearing of 2 April 1640 releasing John's property to Rachel, Rachel is described as having five children[8][9][10]. Rachel soon remarried. Her marriage date is commonly given as 5 August 1642, the date of an agreement (possibly a prenuptial) between Rachel and her second husband Anthony Wilson[8]. (Image on Ancestry in the Connecticut, U.S., Wills and Probate Records, 1609-1999 collection). On that agreement Rachel's daughter Mary is listed as the wife of Francis Purdy. Therefore Francis Purdy and Mary Brundish were married sometime between 2 April 1640 and 5 August 1642. According to this profile, Mary was baptized in England on 10 December 1628. This would have her married at only 13 or 14 years old.
  • She married about 1659, as her 2nd, and as his 2nd, to John Hoyt, son of Simon Hoyt.[1]

Note: This profile previously reported specific marriage info: 14 Oct 1658 Fairfield, Fairfield, Connecticut, which was the date that the inventory was taken for Francis Purdy's estate.

Death and Legacy

Rachel died on 15 September 1684 at Rye, Westchester, New York (p 6).[4]

Children

Children of Mary and Francis Purdy:[11]

  1. John Purdy,
  2. Francis Purdy,,
  3. Joseph Purdy,
  4. Daniel Purdy,
  5. Mary Purdy,

Perry Streeter agrees with the above, and adds the following birth years: John Purdy, b. abt. 1650; Francis Purdy, b. abt. 1651; Joseph Purdy, b. abt. 1652; Daniel Purdy, b. abt. 1655/1656, and Mary Purdy b. abt. 1657/1658. The source is p. 11 of The Colonial Ancestry by Perry Streeter.

Children of Mary and John Hoyt (from John's will):[12]

  1. Samuel
  2. Mary Hoyt
  3. Rachel Hoyt
  4. John Hoyt
  5. Simon Hoyt

Perry Streeter says (adding dates to reference[12]) that the children of Mary Brundish and John Hoyt/Hoit were as follows: Samuel Hoyt/Hoit, b. abt. 1663; John Hoyt, b. abt. 1664; Mary Hoyt; Rachel Hoyt; and Simon Hoyt. The source is p. 11 of The Colonial Ancestry, which was previously referenced.

Scott: children Thomas and Elizabeth have been detached as there was no evidence that Francis Purdy and his wife Elizabeth had children by that name. Please see https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1687724/francis-purdy-1587-bef-1658-straightening-out-some-conflict
