Biography

Temperance was born about 1672. Temperance Browne ... [1]

Temperance was the daughter of John and Sarah Brown. She was married to Thomas Batte of Henrico County, Virginia before April 2, 1688.[2] After Thomas's death, she married John Farrar (before 1 August 1693).[3]

The 1701 will of her mother Sarah WOODSON, widow of John WOODSON indicates that Temperance was alive then:

  • To Martha BATTE, daughter of Thomas BATTE, late of this county, dec'd, negro man Peter.....
  • To grandaughter Martha BATTE, iron pott and ovall table, now in possession of her father in law John FARRAR, etc.......
  • To grandson John KNIBB, negro boy Jack & items.
  • To grandson Solomon KNIBB, items...
  • To Seth Ward's daughter, who was god daughter of Mary RAGSDALE, dec'd, my silver bodkin.
  • To grandson John FARRAR, on negro boy Peter.
  • To grandson Thomas KNIBB, feather bed, etc; also negro boy Jack, if he die, then to my daughter Temperance FARRAR.
  • To granddaughter Mary FARRAR, negroe woman Temp.
  • To grandchildren Martha BATTE, and John & Mary FARRAR, all my sheep to be equally divided.
  • To daughter Temperance FARRAR, all my clothes, livestock , and items.
  • All the rest to my daughter FARRAR, and she to be exec.

Dated 4 Feb 1701. Witnesses: John Bolling, Arthur Mosely, F. Bondurant....Recorded 1 Oct 1704.
