Biography

George Mackenzie Brown (1869-1946) lived in Toronto, Ontario and Scotland, was the son of George Brown, was a publisher, and was a member of the House of Commons in Great Britain from 1901 to 1906.

George Brown was born in Toronto, Ontario to George and Anne Brown. He had two siblings, Margaret Nelson and Catherine Edith Brown, and he was known by his family as a child as "Ginny."

After beginning high school at Upper Canada College, Brown moved to Scotland to attend Merchiston Castle School, and then King's College Cambridge. Upon leaving Cambridge, Brown became the managing trustee of of Thomas Nelson and Sons, an Edinburgh publisher. In 1901, Brown married the daughter of the founder of the firm, Mary Elinor Nelson. She was also his first cousin. They had six children: Edward, Thomas, John Maurice, Alaistair and Roseanne.

Brown ran for parliament in 1901 as a liberal, and was elected to a seat for Edinburgh Central. He sat until 1906, when he retired to Argyll. He died on July 14, 1946.
