Biography

William was born in about 1814, in either South Carolina (1850 census) or Georgia (1860 census). William Brown married Martha Brown (surname at birth) in about 1837 or 1838, Yalobusha County, Mississippi. ^[1] In 1850 and 1860 he and wife Martha (or "Patsy") are enumerated on the federal census in Yalobusha County, Mississippi. ^[2][3]

The marriage of William Brown and Martha Brown was recorded in Yalobusha County, Mississippi Marriages Vol. A. which recorded all marriages in the county between the formation of the county in 1833, and about 1846, when the county began using Vol. B. While Vol. A was lost, an index remains that allows marriages to be arranged by page number and in rough chronological order. The marriage of William Brown and Martha Brown was recorded on page 52 in the vacinity of marriages known from other sources to have taken place between 1837 and 1839.
