Ketanji (Brown) Jackson is Notable.

Ketanji Brown Jackson is an attorney, federal judge, and the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States.[1]

Ketanji Onyika Brown was born on September 14th, 1970 in Washington, D.C. in the United States of America. She is the daughter of Johnny Brown and Ellery Ross. She has a younger brother, Ketajh Brown.[2][3] When she was young, her family moved to Miami, Florida so that her father could go to law school at the University of Miami. Ketanji has said that her interest in the law began as a child when she would watch her father studying as she sat across the table from him coloring.[3]

Ketanji attended college and law school at Harvard University, graduating with B.A. in 1992 and a J.D. in 1996.[2] She met Dr. Patrick G. Jackson while she was in college, and they married in 1996. They have two children.[3][4]

Prior to becoming a Supreme Court Justice, some of Ketanji's career highlights include:[2]

  • Clerk for Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer during the 1999-2000 term
  • Public defender in Washington, D.C., 2005-2007
  • Served on the US Sentencing Commission: Assistant Special Council 2003-2005 and Vice Chair 2010-2014
  • US District Court Judge, 2013-2021
  • Judge for the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit, 2021-2022

In 2022, President Joseph Biden nominated Ketanji to the Supreme Court and Justice Stephen Breyer announced his retirement. She was confirmed by the Senate and was sworn in on June 30th, 2022. This made her the 116th Supreme Court justice and the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court.[5]
