Mary Brown was christened on 7 Jun 1835 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. She was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Brown. Her father's occupation was recorded as watch maker, and the family's address as Prescot.

On the night of June 6th 1841, Mary was in Thatto Heath, Eccleston, Lancashire in the household of her aunt and uncle James Lunt and Jane (Chorley) Lunt.
