Biography

"John de Braose of Glasbury was one of four sons of John de Braose of Bramber and Gower by Margaret ferch Llywelyn.[1] He occurs in a contemporary genealogy where he is named with two of his brothers (Richard is missing).

Following the death of his father, he remained in the care of his mother who remarried to Walter de Clifford. He was primarily associated with the lands of the Clifford family in Glasbury which he obtained from his step-father.

A grant of quittance of various duties to the crown, together with a weekly Tuesday market at Culminton and an annual fair at Michaelmas was given at Woodstock on 16 July 1257 to John de Breuse and his heirs in his demesnes of Culminton, Siveton, Norton and La Bach in Shropshire.[2]

Complete Peerage says of him:

" He had disputes about this manor(on the borders of cos. Brecon and Radnor) with Roger de Clifford in 1272, and with John Giffard of Brimpsfield and Maud his wife. John and Maud conceded the manor to him and his heirs male in 1275, and Roger's claim was settled for 100 marks of silver. (Curia Regis, roll no. 205, mm. 5 d, 6 d, 15; Coram Rege, Mich. 3-4 Edw 1, m. 41, Mich. 4-5 Edw. 1, m. 17 Mich. 5-6 Edw. 1, m. 8)"

An Inquisition Post Mortem dated Wednesday after Hilary 24 Edward I (January 1295/6) at Worcester mentions a third of the manor of Bisseley being held by Margery, late the wife of John de Breuse.[3]

Research Notes

Dallaway,[4] Burke[5] and Elwes[6] list only William as a son of John de Braose and Margaret daughter of Llewelyn.

Obviously connected to wrong father, but no Hugh named as son of John de Braose. Since he has no wife/children or sources, I recommend that we merge him away.

Braose-153 and Braose-152 appear to represent the same person because: no evidence that Hugh ever existed. No sources & no wife/children attached. I recommend that we merge him away.
He was somehow attached to the wrong father. I've corrected it. Thanks, Isaac.
What evidence is there that this person is connected to correct parents? Wikipedia relying on Vivian says Walter III had one daughter by Margaret his heir Matilda.

Moreover, why would this Hugh de Braose be born to Walter de Clifford? That makes no sense.
