Biography

Timothy was born about 1650 (guess).

Timothy married Katherine Rodman in Barbadoes. They had one daughter, Mary.[1]

They moved to West Jersey after they were married. Their daughter Mary was married in Flushing, Long Island.[1]

"Timothy Brandreth m. 2nd, after his move to Cape May Co, Sarah, eldest dau. of William Golding by his first wife Margaret Lake, who was born according to the Gravesend Long Island Town Records, 14th day of 12th month 1676/7. Her father William Golding having been an early whaler in Cape May Co. evidently settled there by 1693 when he purchased his first land. Sarah, d. ca. 1701."[2]

In Burlington County

  • Oct 1688 grant and survey for Timothy Brandreth of 533 acres in Burlington County. Other landowners were WIdow Elton, Thomas Rodman, and John Wills. Symon Charles, surveyor.[3] Another version of this record says this land was "by a meadow". [4]
  • 22 Oct 1688 grant from the Council of Proprietors (signed by Samuel Jennings) for Timothy Brandreth "for the use of Thomas Rodman" comprising 533.33 acres in West Jersey "any place in West Jersey being legally purchased of the Indians and not before surveyed"[5]

On 10 May 1701, Timothy conducted surveys in Cape May for Elias Daws I (abt.1640-aft.1710), Thomas Gandy (abt.1670-aft.1721), John Hickman, Samuel Crowell, Joseph Crowell, Philip Hill.

On this same date, Timothy surveyed his own 300 acres in Cape May County. [6]

20 Jul 1710, Timothy Brandreth cordwainer of Cape May granted 200 acres of land to Samuel Holmes of Cohansey, Salem County [7]

CONVEYANCE. 200 acres. [Unrecorded. West Jersey]. On December 4, 1705 Jacob Spence sold to Timothy Brandreth 200 acres from a property purchased from William Boyle consisting of 1000 acres of land in West Jersey. This land was purchased by Boyle from William Hall, who owned a propriety consisting of 1/100th of West New Jersey. Hall purchased the propriety from Janet West..

Timothy appeared as a neighbor on surveys with Tobias Griscom (who bought John Borton's 511 acres on the west side of Great Egg Harbor River, near a branch of the Middle River, Gloucester County), John Budd, John Mickle (who bought Borton's 36 acres of marshes in Gloucester county on the west side of Great Egg Harbor.

10 May 1713, Timothy "Bradrath" received a grant from John Ladd, "survey of West side of Great Egg Harbor River; between two swamps called "ye Thoroughfair"; a post standing in "ye Marrish"; by a creek which is a branch of Middle River. Gloucester County. First and second taking up of 1/16 part of a propriety which John Ladd purchased of William Allen."[8]

Death and Legacy

"Timothy Brandreth of Cape May d. 3 July 1714, proved 10 May 1715, proved 10 May 1715. Mentioned were wife Sarah and children: Timothy, minor, Mary Hughestis (Huestis), Sarah Middleton, Daniel, Margrate, Penelopey and Elizabeth Brandreth. Sons-in-law (stepsons): Benjamin Shaw and Obadiah Shaw, 400 a. bought of John Lad on Middle Creek of Great Egg Harbor...[9]

Unconnected descendant Daniel Brandriff (1771-1838) supposedly a son of Timothy & Elizabeth Brandriff.
