Biography

The following may nor may not apply to this Anthony Brackett: he may have arrived in New England in 1623,^[1] or 1640,^[2] or some other date entirely. The 1640 arrival date is likely incorrect because he was in New Hampshire before 1640, and by 1640 was living in Portsmouth.^[3]

Anthony Brackett, immigrant, settled in New Hampshire several years prior to 1640.^[4] He had children Anthony, Thomas, John, Eleanor, Jane and perhaps others.^[5] Anthony's wife's name was unknown; his marriage took place before 1638.^[6]

He sold his house at Portsmouth in 1650. By 1671 he was being taxed at Sandy Beach. He deeded his homestead there in 1686 to his son John for life support of himself and his wife.^[7]

Anthony Brackett was killed in an indian attack September 28, 1691, along with his wife and at least 15 other people, in Sandy Beach, Rye, about 4 miles from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Additionally, two of Anthony's grandchildren were taken captive.^[8]

His will of September 11, 1691 named his son John as executive.^[7]

Research Notes

Disputed Parents/Origins: Anthony Brackett's origins are unknown. His birthdate is estimated based on him marrying by 1638. He was likely English, but some say he was Welsh or Scottish. He may have been related to the Bracketts of Boston, but not as close as first cousins. There is nothing to show, or warrant the belief that Anthony and Richard Brackett of Braintree/Boston were closely related.^[3] He has been shown with parents Peter Brackett and Rachel (Wheatley), who were the previously-mentioned Richard's parents, of the family that immigrated to Braintree/Boston, Massachusetts. If quality sources are found for Anthony's parentage, his proper parents will be added to his profile.
