Colonel Sempronius "Pony" Hamilton Boyd was a nineteenth-century politician, lawyer, and judge. Though his family were slaveholders, he fought for the Union Army in the Civil War. Afterward, he served as a member of the United States House of Representatives and was the United States minister to Siam.
Sempronius "Pony" Boyd was born 28 May 1828 in Williamson County, Tennessee, near Nashville. He was the son of Marcus Boyd and Eliza Hamilton.[1] He was about two years old when his family was enumerated in the 1830 census of Williamson County.
[2]
Pony's family moved to Greene County, Missouri in 1840, where his father purchased 200 acres of homestead property about two miles east of Springfield, where he had a large farm.[3] There, he was educated at the private school of John A Stephens, in Springfield. He left school at age seventeen to clerk in the store of D. Johnson & Co. for about two years.[4]
Shortly after the 1850 census,[5] he moved to California. He mined in the placers of the Yuba, Feather, and Moquelnes rivers, and taught school at Volcano, in Amador County.[1][6]
He returned to Springfield, Missouri in about 1855, via Nicaragua and New Orleans. He studied law under Judge William C. Price, and was admitted to the bar in 1856.[4][1]
He married Mary Margaret McElhaney on 11 July 1855 in Greene County, Missouri. Born in 1838, Mary was the daughter of Robert James McElhaney and Cordelia Margaret Bunch.[7][8] They had three known children:
Rufus Marcus Boyd (d. bef 1870)
Cordelia Margaret Boyd (1862-1928)
Robert Marcus Boyd (1869-1896)
Boyd served as mayor of Springfield in 1856, was the first clerk of the probate and common pleas court of Greene County, and was twice city attourney.[1]
The War Years
At the outbreak of the Civil War, his family was sharply divided. He and his father were Unionists, despite being slaveholders, while the rest of his adult brothers favored secession.
Colonel Sempronius Boyd served in the United States Civil War. Enlisted: 11 Jun 1861 Mustered out: 18 Apr 1863 Side: USA Regiment(s): Greene County Home Guards; 24th Regiment, Missouri Infantry
His father, a member of the Missouri State Legislature, assisted in the organization of Phelps' regiment of Home Guards in June of 1861, and was elected their Lieutenant Colonel. Sempronius served as the Home Guard's Major.[9][10]
On 2 August 1861, he was detached from the Home Guards to help raise recruits and organize the 24th Missouri Infantry. He served as its colonel until he resigned in April 1863.[11]
After the War:
He was elected an Unconditional Unionist to the United States House of Representatives in 1862, prompting his resignation from the Army. There, he served as chairman of the Committee on Revisal and Unfinished Business from 1863 to 1865. Boyd was a member of the Republican National Committee from 1864 to 1868, was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1864, and was appointed judge of the court of the fourteenth judicial district in 1865.[12]
Boyd resigned as circuit judge in 1866 in order to interest himself in the completion of the Southwest Pacific Railroad.[1] He was elected back to the House of Representatives as a Republican in 1868, serving again from 1869 to 1871. There, he served as chairman of the Committee on Revolutionary Claims from 1869 to 1871.[12] Because he favored rebel enfranchisement he was ostracized by his party.[1]
In 1872, he founded the Springfield wagon factory, and resumed practicing law in 1874.[1] He was appointed U.S. Minister and Consul General to Siam by President Benjamin Harrison in 1890, serving until 1892.[12][13] He remained in Thailand for only one year, when his health forced his return and resignation.[14]
in June 1894, Col. Boyd went on a trip to a fishing resort in Stone County, Missouri. He died there on 22 June.[14] He was interred in Hazelwood Cemetery in Springfield.[15]
Research Notes
Though he grew up in a household that owned enslaved people, he does not appear to have done so, himself. Indeed, his membership in the Unconditional Union Party suggests that he had embraced Emancipation.
