Biography

John Woody (Woodie) was born 4 Apr 1895 in Menifee County, Kentucky. In his 1918 Draft Registration, he says that he was born 4 Apr 1895,[1] but his tombstone says 1896, [2] and Social Security gives the date of 2 Apr 1896. [3] He was raised in Pomeroyton, Menifee, Kentucky and remained in the county until after the 1920 US Census.[4][5] He was able to go to school through the 5th grade.[6] He married Sarah Pelfrey (1899-1962) and by 1918, they had two small children. They were still living in Menifee Co., Kentucky where he worked as a farmer for another man.[1] The 1920 Census indicates that they had two children, one of whom was under a year old, so it is possible that a young child had died between 1918 and 1920.[7] By 1930, Woodie and Sarah had moved to Indiana with their young family. Records indicate that he was a laborer during the Great Depression.[8] In 1940, he worked for the WPA. He and his wife had eight children living with them between 2 and 23 years of age. [6] Sarah died in 1962, and John joined her in 1967.[2]
