James Bowman was born in Appalachia, in Kentucky.

James was born in 1907 to Jacob and Emily (McGuire) Bowman. He married Ruby Eunice Wilson on November 26, 1931. Four children were born to this marriage.

In the 1930 census James (age 22), Farmer, was the single son of Jake Bowman on Beattyville-Booneville Road, Buck Creek, Owsley, Kentucky, United States.^[2]

Arch was mentioned in the obituary of his mother Emily Mc Guire Bowman on 29 April 1939 in Lexington, Kentucky, United States.^[3]
