Biography

Nancy Jane Bowers was born in January, 1843 in Hagarville, Johnson County, Arkansas. She was the daughter of William Bowers and Sabra Christie. We first find Nancy in 1850 living with her parents and two older half brothers, a younger brother and younger sister.[1] Nancy's mother Sabra is 32 years old and her father William is 63 years old. Nancy's half brothers are John R. Barnes, 12 years old and Reddin Barnes, 9 years old. They are enumerated as "Bowers" children but will use their Barnes surname later in life when they join the Confederate Army. Nancy's younger brother William, born about 1846 is 4 years old. Her younger sister (Mary) Sabra, born about 1849 is 1 year old. Nancy's father William Bowers Sr. is a Farmer, probably a squatter. A thorough search of the Land and Tax Records at the Johnson County Historical Society turned up no tax or land records at all for William Bowers in Perry Twp., Johnson County, Arkansas. There was a William S. Bowers farming near there but his wife and children do not match ours. It is unknown whether he is related or not. Nancy's mother Sabra was previously married to a man named Barnes (possibly John). Sabra was the daughter of William Christie, a half breed Cherokee from the Great Cherokee Nation in Eastern Tennessee at the mouth of the Hiwassee River in Tahquohee District. Watt Christie and George Vann, two well known men in the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory testified in Affidavit as to their knowledge of William Christie, his father Ned Christie and Sabra. See Sabra (Christie) Bowers. In 1860 Nancy is 17 years old. Her father William passed away in the last five years.[2] Nancy's half brothers John R. and Reddin Barnes have gone off to fight the Civil War with the Confederates. Her brother William is only 15 years old, but four years from now will go off to fight on the side of the Union Army. See William M. Bowers Jr. Nancy's sister Jermiah is 12 years old, she should have been on the 1850 Census but is not so her age in 1860 is questionable. (Madison) James Bowers "M.J." was born in Feb 1852 in Johnson County, Arkansas. See Madison James Bowers The youngest of the siblings is Martha Elizabeth Bowers, she was born 7 Sep 1855 on Earls Prarie, Johnson County, Arkansas. Her father William probably died shortly after her birth. Nancy met and married Samuel McIntyre, probably in Logan County, Arkansas. There is no record of her marriage. Samuel McIntyre went off to fight in the Civil War.[3] Samuel Mcintyre was killed in action and buried at the National Cemetery in Little Rock, Arkansas.[4] Nancy claimed a Widow's Pension.[5] In 1870 Nancy is living with Elizabeth (Corley) and her husband Jacob Frost in Short Mountain, Franklin County, Arkansas. Jacob and Elizabeth are from Tishomingo County, Mississippi.[6] Nancy is 26 years old and a Civil War widow. Her brother M.J. is 17 years old and her sister Martha, 13 years old are living with her at the Frost's. On 4 Apr 1871 Nancy Jane (Bowers) (McIntyre) married Josiah Cooper Clark Womack in Johnson County, Arkansas.[7] In 1880 Nancy and Josiah Womack have settled down in Short Mountain, Logan County, Arkansas.[8] Josiah was previously married to Mary Ann Frost. She passed away in March of 1870. Josiah and Nancy have six children in their home; Mary's children Levi F. Womack was born about 1861 and is 19 years old; John B. Womack was born about 1863 and is 17 years old; a son S.A. Womack was born about 1869 and is 11 years old; Nancy's children George J. Womack was born about 1876 and is 4 years old; a son Jesse L. Womack, was born about 1878 and is 2 years old and Lina Womack was born in May of 1880 and is 1 month old. Josiah C.C. Womack passed away in Driggs, Logan County, Arkansas 12 May 1890.[9] He is buried at Centerpoint Cemetery in Magazine, Logan County, Arkansas. In 1900 Nancy Jane Womack is living in Twp. 9, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory otherwise known as Kemp Town.[10] Her daughter Mary E. Womack is now 20 years old, her son Arthur Virgil Womack born 7 Jul 1886 is 14 years old and her son Jesse L. Womack is 23 years old and married to Belle (unknown), from Texas. On 1 Jan 1911 Nancy Jane (Bowers) Womack passed away in Blaine County, Oklahoma. She was 68 years old.[11]
