Biography

Joseph Onil Romeo Boutin was born in St. Camille parish, Québec on November 22, 1881. Onil was the son of Charles Boutin and Vitaline Boutin. He married Marie Gervais on August 3, 1920, in Cantal, Saskatchewan. Marie passed away in 1936. Onil then married Celina Lemaire on June 20, 1938, in Cantal, Saskatchewan. Celina passed away in 1957. Joseph Onil Romeo Boutin passed away on September 22, 1972, in Carnduff, Saskatchewan. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

Along with his father, uncle and brothers, Onil homesteaded just northeast of Cantal, Saskatchewan in 1901 and 1902. Onil's homestead was registered under the name "Oneil Boutin" on April 23, 1902 (record number 101942) and was located at NW-10-6-1-W2 (see attached image).[6]

Certain sources spell his preferred name as "Onil" (birth certificate and birth record in St. Camille, Quebec's parish diary) and others spell it as "Onile" (1891 Census of Canada) while yet others spell it as "Oneil" (1901 Census of Canada, 1911 Census of Canada, 1916 Census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, and his tombstone in Cantal, Saskatchewan). His birth certificate and the record of his birth in the St. Camille parish diary would seem to be the most definitive of these so I, Daniel Boulet (his grandson), am going to go with Onil in this profile.

It gets even more 'entertaining' if one looks at other official documents. For example, the long-form birth certificate for my mother that I obtained recently gives her father's first name as "OMIL". The information on this long-form birth certificate would have come from the "Record of Registration of Birth" that would have been filled out and then sent to the Saskatchewan government shortly after my mother was born. I have a certified copy of her "Record of Registration of Birth". In the section describing my mother's father, his handwritten name could be interpreted as "Omil Boutin" or "Oniel Boutin". On the other hand, at the bottom of the form, my mother's mother signed the form "Mrs. Oniel Boutin" although a fairly weak case could be made that she signed the form as "Mrs. Omil Boutin".

In keeping with the rule that a person's 'official' name is (generally) how their name was written when they were born, I (Daniel Boulet) am going to stick with "Onil" as his first name.
