James Booker was a flamboyant New Orleans rhythm and blues composer, singer, and keyboard virtuoso with an influential signature backbeat, the "Booker groove."[1]
James Carroll Booker III, son of James Harold Booker and Ora Cheatham was born in New Orleans in 1939.[2] Born into a musical family, he was a brilliant child prodigy who grew up to struggle with addiction and mental illness.[3]
He was forty-three years old when he died at Charity Hospital in 1983; he was buried in Providence Memorial Park in Metairie, Louisiana.[4]
