Jane Matilda Bolin, LL.B. was the first black woman to graduate from Yale Law School, the first to join the New York City Bar Association and the first to join the New York City Law Department. She became the first black woman to serve as a judge in the United States when she was sworn into the bench of the New York City Domestic Relations Court in 1939.[1]
Jane Matilda Bolin was the daughter of Gaius Bolin and Matilda Emery. She was born in Poughkeepsie, New York on April 11, 1908. [2][3]
Her father practiced law in Poughkeepsie, New York. [4]
She graduated from Poughkeepsie High School and attended Wellesley College. It was reported in 1924 that Jane had been added to the honor record in her freshman year at Wellesley. [5]
She died in 2007 [3] and is interred at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. [2]
