Biography

Katherina Dorothea Henrietta "Doras" Blode (married name 'Schultz was born about 1822 in Mecklenberg, Prussia (what is now Germany)/Hamburg, Deutsches Reich.[citation needed]

She migrated to Victoria, Australia in 1848 on the 'Dockenhuden' and she was recorded as a cook. On board she must have met Anton Fredrich Wilhelm Schultz, a mason. {Citation Needed}

They married on 18 December 1851 in Independent Chapel, East Melbourne, Victoria.[1][2] Their children were:

Doris died on 4 August 1913 at Cheltenham Benevolent Asylum in Cheltenham, Victoria.[5]

Research notes

Doris and Anton married in 1851 in Melbourne after the birth of their first child, Antoinette. The marriage document is totally handwritten and not with a standard format, as the State of Victoria had only just been proclaimed.

Many German speaking people were known by their second name, and this is the case with Doras (short for Dorothea). The 'th' sound caused much difficulty for the German speaker, so that is probably why she was called Doras.

Her surname is variously written on the remaining documents. It looks like Blede, but as this means stupid in German it is not certain this is accurate either. The explanation of the various transcriptions is that the English speaking writers at the time could not understand her thick German accent.

Unable to find a decent shipping list for the Dockenhuden. Best one found was at https://localwiki.org/adelaide-hills/Barque_Dockenhuden_%2821May1849%29, which included an A. Schultz as disembarking at Melbourne. Salt-463 09:28, 5 Mar 2024

Dear Carol,

I removed the two needs birth categories, because they were contradictory and - for Mecklenburg - pointless, since there was no village to check known. Please add sources for the origins. Maybe some of our suggestions How to break down your German immigrant brick wall might help here.

Kind regards from Black Forest
