Biography

Cheshire (historic flag)
James Blake was born in Whitegate, Cheshire, England.

James Blake, illegitimate son of Sarah Blake (a domestic servant of Lea Green, Church Minshull) was born on 17th July 1889 at Bradford Wood, Over, Cheshire, England, and the birth registered by her on the 10th September at Over subdistrict in the Northwich registration district of Cheshire [1][2]. James was baptised at Whitegate, Cheshire on 14th September 1889 [3]

In 1891 James, aged two, was living with his grandparents Thomas Blake (46), Martha Blake (44) and his uncles Thomas (21), John (9), Noah (7) and Joseph (3) and aunts Betsy (11), Mary (5) and Martha (4 months) at Bradford Wood Cottages, Winsford, Cheshire [4]

In 1901 the family was still living at Bradford Wood Cottages, and now comprised Thomas (a saltmaker) and Martha, and Joseph (12), Martha (10) and James (11) [5].

James married Frances Nield in the December quarter of 19 11[6].

In 1911 James was a waggoner on a farm, living with his brother Samuel Blake (abt.1879-) (32) and his wife Eliza (31) and their children Gertrude (9), Percy (7), Leslie (4), Margaret Noreen (2) and Martha Eliza (3 months) [7].

In 1939 James was a Roadman, working for Cheshire County Council. He was living with his wife, Frances, and his children (Annie, James, Lucy and two redacted) at Green Lane Cottage, Bucklow, Cheshire. Annie's married name was Clarke [8].

James' death in the September quarter of 1960 was registered in the Bucklow district of Cheshire [9].

Research notes

James may have the same father as Ted Grey.

Are you related to James? Or have another interest in this profile? I would be very happy to hand over management to you.

If you are related to James, have you had, or would you be willing to have, a DNA test? I'm trying to find descendants of the ancestors of Vincent Joseph Maurice Morris Gill (1904-1975) and his wife Louisa (Blake) Gill (1911-1978) as their descendents' DNA show a close relationship with my grandfather John Edward Grey (1887-1944). If you are descended from James, and I could compare your DNA to my mother's, we could find out whether the Blake family (or his unknown father's family) contained her grandfather.

Birth certificate ordered 3 Jan 2020.

Annie's married name was Clarke [10].

1891 census: Bradford Wood Cottages had 2 dwellings, the other occupied by Eliza Norris (living alone, but married, aged 47).

James may have served in the RAF during WW1 - but name is Charles James, not used elsewhere[11]

No probate (searched 3 Jan 2020)
