Not a lot of information exists on Patriot Isaiah Blackford. Family lore has it, that he went for a walk in 1777 and never came home until after the War for Independence. If that was the case, it seems as though there would be more records available to record his service other than a few slips of paper showing him mustering in as a Private in the 1st Essex New Jersey Foot Militia under Captain’s Laing and Scudder in Colonel Edward Thomas’ Battalion and paying a fine under orders from the Convention of New Jersey. Maybe his walk-a-bout was more to find himself than serve, only time knows. [Editor note: The 'fine' that he paid was "three pounds," which according to an ordinance just passed in New Jersey, was the fee that privates could pay in order to not have to fight. This isn't explicitly stated on his muster card and is this editor's conjecture.]
Isaiah was married to Abigail Bonnell (Bunnell), a Mayflower descendant, and about 1791 he removed his family to Woodford County, Kentucky. He died in 1809 living as a tenant resident on property owned by Patrick Duran. Isaiah was either a drunk or a whiskey maker as his estate records reflect approximately four-hundred eighty gallons and thirteen old barrels. Also at his death he had eight horses, eighty-five head of cattle, twenty-six hogs, a house Bible (that I wish would magically appear someday), and, unfortunately, in 1810 the Second Kentucky census reflects his widow, Abigail, had one female slave living with her. To date, a will for Isaiah has never been found.
Through various records, it seems Isaiah and Abigail had six children; Susannah, Sarah, Mary, Isaiah Jr., Zephaniah, and Abigail. Susan’s death and whereabouts are unknown, Sarah married 1) Arminger Lily Bell and 2) White and is buried in Miami County, Indiana; Mary married Thomas Richey and is buried in Jennings County, Indiana; Isaiah married 1) Rebecca McFadden, 2) Sarah Laforce and is buried in Jefferson County, Indiana; Zephaniah married Jane Consley and is buried in Jefferson County, Indiana; and Abigail married Frederick Reed and is buried in the same cemetery as her mother, Abigail, and brother, Zephaniah.
Isaiah had several brothers who served in the Revolutionary War, one of which was Zephaniah, who serve General George Rogers Clark as a quartermaster and died in Jefferson County, Kentucky.
A headstone for Isaiah was documented in 1972 in Woodford County, Kentucky and after many hours of searching by many eyes it seems to have given way to time and disappeared
