Note

Note: From the Book "Our Black Family in America" compiled by Chester A. Black and Sarah H. Black
Pg 239
The following incident in the life of Aunt Louisa and her family was sent by her daughter Lula:
There was an incident in our lives that left a deep and lasting impression on all of mother's children and has been a staunch testimony to each of us through our lives. That and mother's undying faith and strength under all hardships have kept me close to the Chruch and drawn me back when I have strayed too far.
We were living at that time in Mexico, alone in a foreign land. We were living in poverty, not even having the necessities of life. We could never afford coal oil for a light, so had to eat our meager meals before dark. On this particular evening, being summer time, my brothers were making their beds in the yard by the light of the moon. Mother and we girls were in the house preparing for bed. A young couple in Diaz just marred that day had moved into a small house across the block from us. I must have been about eight years old. I looked toward the small house and exclaimed, "Mama, Milo and Georgie have a light, will we ever have a light?"
Mother answered, "Yes, dear child, God has not forgotten us and some day we will have a light." At that instant there appeared in our house a ball of light, brighter than any light I have ever seen. It lighted up the house and yard as bright as day. It lasted but a few seconds and when it disappeared we started asking each other what it could have been. Mother said, "That is God's way of showing us we are not forgotten and that we have a light with us always as long as we are faithful." We have never tried to explain it, but it made a lasting impression on all of us and has helped many times to carry us over the rough places.
