William Black was a Latter Day Saint pioneer.

Biography

William Black was born on 11 February 1826 in Vermillion Township, Richmond County, Ohio, the son of John Black and Mary (Cline) Black. William Morley Black married 6 Women in his life with children from each.

  • His father and family moved to Bridgeport, Illinois.
  • William left Bridgeport and ran for Sheriff in Cuba, Illinois; which is a town about 100 miles east of Nauvoo. In the story it states that William and a group of gold seekers traveled about 100 miles and stopped in Nauvoo about two years after the first Mormons had left the town. It had to be in Cuba, Illinois and not in Cuba, Ohio as find a grave describes it. [1]
  • Elected Sheriff on Democratic Ticket, in 1848 in Cuba, Illinois, United States
  • News of the discovery of gold in California reached the town of Cuba, Illinois in 1849.
  • 01 April 1849, William Morley with others formed a joint stock company in Cuba to go to the gold fields of California.
  • 3rd April 1849, headed towards the gold fields of California.
  • Entered Salt Lake Valley on Way to California, on 24 July 1849 with an Ox team company headed to California gold fields.
    • After Isaac Morley took William Black into his home in Manti, Utah, William Black adopted Morley as his middle name to honor that adopted relationship. William Morley Black was the name he used in all his dealings after that time, but his birth name was William Black.
  • Meets Brigham Young and John Taylor on 25 July 1849, in Bowery, Salt Lake City, Utah.
  • Baptized as a Mormon by Levi Jackman on 17 August 1849 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States

      • "In 1888, because of the Edmunds Anti-Polygamy Act of 1882 and US Marshalls after him, William was forced to move his families to Diaz, Mexico in the Mormon Colonies. They lived in Juarez, then Casas Grandes. During one of his trips to the United States, he purchased a farm in Fruitland, New Mexico, and resided there for a short time. In 1904, his fifth wife, Louisa Ann Washburn died and was buried in Safford, Arizona. In l905 he returned to Pacheco, Mexico until 1912.
  • Moved to Mexico, 1890s, part of the group establishing Colonies there for the safety of the Polygamists. William Morley had a total of 6 wives, and many children and grandchildren.

  • The Mexican Revolution in 1912 forced all Americans to leave Mexico. The Black family left with 300 other refugees. William left a brick home, 25 acres, animals and most of his earthly possessions. Over 4,000 members of the church left Mexico in l912. " ~William
    • Women and children, and older people were sent back on a train to Arizona, in tightly packed boxcars full of people, with little food or water and no facilities in 100+ deg. temperatures (F). It was a long and miserable journey. Many of the men were conscripted into the Mexican Army, and forced to fight, but some, like my Grandpa Alvin Black, was able to escape through the lines by a combination of stealth and shooting, and made it north and back across the Rio Grande, eventually finding his little family again back in Glendale, Utah.   • William Morley Black led a versitle life. His occupations included; Flour Miller, Independent Farmer, Pioneer, Sheriff, Teamster, Saw Mill and Grist Mill Builder, Millwright, and wanted to be a Gold Miner, but never made it to California. Stopped in Utah and joined the LDS church instead.
    • Did masonry work for foundation of the Council House
    • Built Saw Mills and Grist Mills through out Utah and in Mexico; in Sanpete, Manti, Nephi, Ephraim, Circleville, Beaver, Washington County, Kanab, Lehi, and Glendale, Utah; Casas Grandes, and Juarez, Mexico.
    • Received his Ordination as a Patriarch.
  • William died 21 June 1915, in Blanding, San Juan, Utah, United States. He was buried the next day in Blanding City Cemetery. [1]

William Morley Black is my 2nd great Grandpa ❤️ You have done such a great job on his profile! I just ran across these sources in case you have not seen them already. He is mentioned several times in Warriner Ahaz Porter's record, as they traveled south from Orderville and to Mexico together, and also Warriner married Rachel Ann Black, one of WM's daughters.
