Military Service, Civil War
William served the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. He was a 1st Lieutenant in Company I, 19th Regiment, Alabama Infantry.[5]
On December 31, 1862, he was injured in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
The following information is from William's file on Fold3.[6]
William was commissioned a First Lieutenant in Company B, 19th Alabama Infantry Regiment, on August 10, 1861, at Coloma, Alabama.
In September 1861, William was present with his company at Blue Springs, five miles north of Huntsville, Alabama.
In December 1861, he was in camp near Mobile, Alabama.
In November 1862, his company was in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
William was "dangerously" wounded near Murfreesboro on December 31, 1862.
On April 8, 1863, William was killed in action at Murfreesboro. See the notes below regarding discrepancies in death dates amongst records.
A claim for William's effects and pay was submitted by the Hon. J. P. Ralls, Attorney, on July 14, 1863. A sum of $324.00 was due to William's heirs.
Death / Burial
William was killed in action at the age of 42, on January 19, 1863, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee during the Civil War. He is buried at the Lebanon United Methodist Church Cemetery, Pleasant Gap, Cherokee County, Alabama.[7]
PROBLEM WITH DEATH DATE: William's Fold3 file indicates he died or was killed on April 8, 1863, while his gravestone has a date of January 9, 1863. There is only one record in the file Fold3 stating his death date and it may have been transcribed in error.
William was listed as dangerously wounded at Murfreesboro and he may have died of wounds later, after the battle. Given the date of the Battle of Murfreesboro, December 31 - January 2, the death date of January is likely correct due to the closeness in time to the battle, but this assumption should have corroborating evidence.
To make matters more confusing, the Alabama Civil War Database lists William's death date as November 30, 1863. This is very unlikely since the claim for William's effects and pay had already been filed and paid. The facts from that database are listed below for comparison.[8]
