Biography

Military Figure. He is remembered as an American military figure with his service starting as a twelve-year-old fifer with the Connecticut's troops during the American Revolutionary. In 1788 he enlisted with the U.S. Army, commencing a military career that saw service along the frontier from New Orleans to Canada. As Captain Bissell, he came to Missouri in 1804 where he became a close friend of frontiersman Daniel Boone. Bissell received the official transfer of the Spanish fort at New Madrid, Missouri; the post was commissioned to him by Captain Amos Stoddard as agent of the French Republic. In 1807 he was ordered to Fort Bellefontaine upon the death of his older brother Major Russell Bissell. He appointed Commander of Fort Bellefontaine and Military Governor of Upper Louisiana by President Thomas Jefferson in 1808. He served with distinction during the War of 1812 and was promoted to brigadier general on March 9, 1814. After retiring from active duty, he was prominent in the early affairs of St. Louis, Missouri. He died from the complications of pneumonia. His home is now owned by the St Louis County Missouri Parks Service and opened to the public for historical tours.
