Irene B. West was the first black teacher hired in 1962 in the Elk Grove School District, Sacramento County and served for 27 years both as a teacher and principal. She was active in the Civil Rights movement. In 2002, the Irene B. West Elementary School was named in her honor.
Irene Bias was born in 1932 to Nixon Bias and Debbie Broussard. She graduated valedictorian of her high school class and went on to Fisk University where she met her husband, Clifton L. West, Jr. She received her Bachelor's Degree from California State University at Sacramento. She then went on to get her Masters Degree from the University of San Fransisco.
She married Clifton West on 7 Jun 1950 in Orange, Texas.[1]

Dr. Cornel West
In 1963 the Sacramento Observer named her Mother of the Year.
She passed away 21 Apr 2021 in Sacramento, California.
