Biography

Johan Berglund was born in Brunna, Hedemora, 12 September 1852. His parents were Anders Gustaf Larsson Berglund and his wife Carin Ersdotter.^[1]

Johan Berglund married Charlotta Christina Malmqvist 28 May 1881. They had two daughters who died in infancy and then in 1885 a third daughter, Brita Astrid Aurora, who survived.^[2]

Johan Berglund went to America in May 1888. Before that they had had a son, who also died in infancy.^[3] His wife followed the next year: Charlotta Berglund, 24 years old, arrived to Boston on the steamship Cephalonia 30 September 1889 with her four-year-old daughter "Astaid" (=Astrid).^[4]

The New York State Census, 1892 lists the "Burglund" family - John, "Charlato", "Ostridt" and Katie - in Brooklyn, Ward 12, E.D. 16.^[5]

By 1900 Charlotte Berglund was widowed, living in Brooklyn with two daughters: Astrid, 15, born in Sweden and Karen, 10, born in New York. The record correctly states that she has had five children, two living.^[6]

Johan Berglund had died 9 December 1899.^[7]
