The Order was granted for 200 Acres on the 5th of May, 1790. There are also documents petitioning for 200 acres in 1791 on behalf of his second wife Elizabeth Schermerhorn, pg 146-148 [7]

Research Notes

  • Death date and Burial Location - no record has been found to confirm where and when Mattheus died.
  • LNAB is Bensen based on his father's last name given on the FamilySearch transcription (best available source) of his baptism record. - Smith-62120 00:38, 3 July 2019 (UTC)
  • LNAB on Mattheus Benson's child Eve is "Bense"
  • Update - Birth date now corrected as per source A Frisian Family. Marytje is daughter of Albert and Divertje Berden. No church record has been found to verify the birth date or the last name of his wife Marytje (Berden-22). Other documents list her last name as Berden, daughter of Albert Berden and Divertje Banta but her birth date does not seem to fit this information.
  • Trees by Dan website gives her last name as Berden, dau. of Albert Berden and Divertje Banta but its only source is an unsourced Gedcom (Marriage: circa 1754; Schrallenberg, Bergen, New York, U.S.A.; per GEDCOM of Rich Turnblom, Aug 25, 2004.)
  • Update- This question resulted from having two children incorrectly attached to Mattheus and Marytje Benson. It is no longer a concern, the merge should proceed. "A merge was proposed between Berden-22 and Berdan-64. I am not sure that the Mary Berdan, daughter of Albert and Divertje Berdan...is the right Mary Berdan who married Mattheus Benson. The book, A Frisian Family (referenced on Berden-22 ) lays out the Berdan children's birth dates. It appears that the only Mary (Marytje or Maria) Berdan was born 1742 and would only have been about 13 years old when the first Benson child was born (Betsy Benson b. 1755) . Mary had two younger sisters, both named Eva. Assuming the one born in 1734 died, then that leaves Eva Berdan b. 1736. Was her full name Eva Marytje or Marytje Eva? Need a marriage record or birth, baptism record. The H.C. Burleigh Papers referenced in Berden-22 also list out the children of Albert Berdan and Dievertje Banta, oddly listing the marriage of Mary Berdon ( why spell with an "o" when all the others were "BerdAn") to Matthew Benson of Adolphustown, as if Mary was not a child of Albert Berdan? Perhaps the author was not sure if Mary was related? Family Search and an Internet search has, so far, not produced a church document for the birth or baptism of Marytje (Maria, Mary) Berdan. "

Found this christening record for Eva Bense, father is given as Matthewis Bense, mothers name not listed . Date matches info I have for her, she is child #10 listed above in the bio of Matthew . Might help resolve the LNAB and merge proposal? "New Jersey Births and Christenings, 1660-1980", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FZ6Q-L98 : 18 January 2020), Eva Bense, 1777.
Regarding the merge of Berdan-22 and Berdan-64. I made research notes regarding the possibility that Marytje Berdan, daughter of Albert Berdan and Divertje Banta was not the wife of Matthew Benson. That it could be another Marytje Berdon, parents unknown. Completely agree we need more proof one way or the other.

However, I think that does not take away from the proposed merge of the two profiles in question. I think the merge should proceed. Berdan-64 perhaps more accurately is not linked as a daughter to Albert Berdan and Divertje Banta. But both profiles are linked as wives of Matthew Benson. They are the same wife person to Matthew Benson. I feel what needs to be done is merge the two but remove the link to Albert Berdan and Divertje Banta as daughter until proven.

Thanks, Beryl. That information you found is from Riker's Revised History of Harlem, Page 433, available (without a subscription) at https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=loc.ark:/13960/t2h716z38&view=1up&seq=461

That page is missing from the archive.org version of the book.

Benson-2423 and Benson-2417 appear to represent the same person because: These are clearly the same person. Before merging, however, we should dig up some church records for him in order to determine his LNAB.
