Biography

William Robert Bennett is presumed to have been born circa 1759, in Virginia, to Martha Mary Collins and Charles Bennett.

He married Catherine "Caty" Jacobs , daughter of Jacob and Hannah (Johnson) Jacobs, about 1784 at Monongalia, West Virginia - their children: Hannah, Lucretia, Mary Polly, John, Rebecca, Martha, Robert Collins, Thomas M., Nancy, Catherine, William, a second Nancy, a second Martha and a second Lucretia Bennett.

In 1814, according to Pioneer Ohio Newspapers 1802-1818, Catherine wrote a letter in which she says she has left him for the third time because of his adultery and abuses. Chancery Records of Scioto County have the divorce recorded on 10/18/1814.

In 1825, Catherine filed another suit that 8 years ago Robert started an adulterous affair with an unmarried woman Rebecca Devers. He has a number of illegitimate children by Rebecca.

The profile for these parents have sources that prove that they were living in St. John's Parish Register, Joppa, Harford County, Maryland

Charles Bennett & Martha Collins were marr'd September 11th 1753."

and daughters births are recorded in the same book... from 1755 thru 1758 so they lived in Maryland until after that date.

The state of Virginia is 205 miles southwest from Harford, Maryland. It is then 353 miles NORTHWEST, and way out of the way to Scioto, Ohio.

So are we sure we have the correct parents for William????
