Biography

Sarah Gerry Beman was born 21 Sep 1808^[1] in Colchester CT. She was the child of the Reverend Jehiel Chappel Beman and Fannie Condol.

She married Roswell Jeffrey of Lyme CT on 18 Feb 1827 in Colchester, Connecticut, USA. Samuel A Peters (J. P.) performed the ceremony.^[2] The Jeffrey family moved to northwestern New York c. 1829 and settled in Rochester NY.

Sarah had five children^[3]

1. Mary, b. 1831
2. daughter, born between 1830 and 1840, possibly in Geneva NY
3. child, perhaps born and died between 1830 and 1840
4. Jehiel, b 1838
5. Roswell, b 1839

Heritage

• Her mother's parents were Nehantic.
• Her grandfather Caesar Beman was of African descent, possibly born in Africa.
• Her grandmother Sarah Gerry was listed as white in the census, possibly also of Wangunk descent.

The 1840 census shows Sarah as a "free colored person". The 1850 census lists her as Mulatto.

Death

She passed away 25 Dec 1854 and is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Rochester, New York.^[4]
