Biography

Nancy's first appearance in records is in 1797 when she released her dower rights in a deed[1] in Russell County, VA. Nancy was, though, married to James Daniel Jr. by 1789 as the birth of one of their sons in that year is well documented. James and Nancy Daniel were probably married about 1787, which allows us to estimate a birth year of around 1767 for her. This date is supported by the 1810 census[2] of Floyd County, KY.

Her maiden name is not proved, but there are numerous interactions between James Jr. and Nancy Daniel and the Belcher family in Russell County, VA records. Most telling, perhaps, is the fact that John Belcher was security for Nancy's appointment[3] as sole executor of the estate of her deceased husband in 1801. While not proof, James and Nancy Daniel named a son Isom/Isham which is a commonly used name in the Belcher family. Nancy had remarried to Samuel Sellards by the date of this deed.

Nancy's last verifiable appearance in records is on 21 November 1814 when she made a deed[4] to Thomas, Isom and George Daniel for land owned by her deceased husband in Tazewell County, VA. The area where James Daniel had lived was cut off into Tazewell County, in December 1799.

Some sources cite a date of Jun 1819 for Nancy's death, but the source for this information is not documented.

I took a quick look and did not find a (re)marriage record for Samuel Sellards or any deeds made by him. No idea where the Jun 1819 date of death for Nancy comes from.

Dang.

It looks like the two wives confusion is for both James Daniel and son Isom/Isham Daniel. Neither claim is credible.

No wife for James Daniel is ever mentioned in primary records except for Nancy. Unless some primary record source for this other wife surfaces, I would discount it.

The same is true for the claims for two wives for Isom/Isham Daniel. There is nothing to suggest he had two wives.

It would make Isom/Isham a bigamist, if true, as he would have been having children with two women at the same time based on some of the birth dates given.

The author also seems to be mixing up some of the children of Isham and his brother Thomas.

I've never seen another wife claimed for Isom/Isham and he married Mary Borders in 1809 and Polly, a nickname for Mary, was appointed the guardian of his children in February 1848. Both of these are from primary records.

it is good to address Adam's book though so that folks realize that it is not a reliable source of information.

There may, or may not, be some good information in this book. I would take anything not supported by a primary record with a grain of salt.

If someone cites "facts" with no primary record evidence to support them, be wary!

Nancy Daniel Sellards of Floyd County, KY made a deed to her three sons in 1814 in Floyd County, KY. She probably died there. Samuel Sellards is in the 1820 Floyd County, Ky census with a wife just a bit too young to be Nancy. It could be a mistake in her age, but since someone is quoting a pretty precise date of death for her, I am guessing Samuel Sellards either remarried before 1820 and the record of his marriage is in Floyd County marriage books, or else he made a deed and a wife not named Nancy released her dower rights. I'll do a search when I get a chance.

Cheers,

Kevin

Hi Sharon. Do not put any faith in Adam's book. MANY glaring errors in it.

James Daniel was born in Virginia not Yorkshire, England.

He didn't come on the Bonaventure.

Tax records in Washington and Russell Cos, VA show that he was the son of James Sr.

James died in 1799, not 1801. His will was presented in 1799.

"Ison" Daniel??!!! His name is never spelled with an N. It is spelled many times as Isham & Isom, though.

Nancy wasn't born in Lawrence Co, KY in 1773. Lawrence Co did not even exist until 1821. Kentucky Co, VA, from which the state of Kentucky was created, did not exist until 1776.

Numerous records place the Belchers (if Nancy was a Belcher) in Washington and Russell Cos, VA before 1800.

Many more errors!

I would not change anything based on this book.

1799 cannot be her birth date, as her son Isham was was born that same year. If this is the same person as in Belcher-2346, the birth date of about 1773 sounds more realistic. Thanks
