Biography

Catherine (Katherine) "Kate" Beals was born in 1836 in East Leverett, Massachusetts, the daughter of Alanson Beals and his wife Maria.

The 1850 U.S. Census recorded her as Catharine Beals, age 14, in the household of her parents Alanson C. Beals and Mariah Beals, in Shutesbury, Massachusetts. Alanson Beals was age 45, a bootmaker, and Mariah Beals was 44. They shared their home with Jane Beals, 16; Lucius Beals, 21; Catharine Beals, 14; Martha Beals, 9; and Ellen Beals, 6. All were born in Massachusetts.^[1]

Catherine Beals, daughter of Alanson C. Beals, was married to William Barry Stetson, son of Gideon Stetson, in the Congregational Church in Shutesbury, Massachusetts, on 12 April 1855. She was age 19 and a native of Leverett. He was age 20, a farmer, and a native of Shutesbury. It was the first marriage for both.^[2]

The couple lived in Shutesbury and had three children: Jeannette (born 1856), Charles (born 1858), and Clara Stetson (born 1861). ^[3][4]

Katie B. Stetson died in Shutesbury on 29 September 1863, at the recorded age of 27 years, 6 months. According to the record she was married (husband not named) and was born in Leverett to _____ Beals and Maria (____) Beals, who were born, respectively, in Leverett and Hadley. The death record states that she died from "inflammation bowels." ^[5] According to Rudy's List of Archaic Medical Terms, this diagnosis referred to the illness now known as appendicitis.^[6] She is buried in the Stetson cemetery in Shutesbury; her grave marker gives her name as "Kate."^[7]

Research Notes

Mitochondrial DNA haplogroup is H6a1 or H6a1a, based on testing (by 23andMe) of children of two different daughters of her granddaughter Louise Clark Anderson. - Ellen Smith.
