John Bauld was born about August 1768 and was baptised on 28 August 1768 in Cockburnspath, Berwickshire, Scotland. His parents were William Bald (~1740 - ) and Isbell Fairbairn (~1746 - )[1].

John married Margaret Black (~1766 - 1857) on 20 January 1794 in Edrom, Berwickshire[2].

John is said to have died in 1836. According to his headstone he was 56 at the time of his death however this would mean he was born in 1780 and not 1768. Being born in 1780 would mean he was only 14 at the time he married Margaret. According to the same headstone his wife Margaret died in 1857 at the age of 92 years which would make her 15 years older than her husband it is highly unlikely that a 14 year old boy married a 29 year old woman in 1794. Given we have a baptism dated 1768 for John it is more likely the age at death on the headstone is incorrect. John was buried in Cockburnspath Churchyard[3]. The inscription on the headstone reads:
