Biography
William Batman (or Bateman) was born about 1728. He was possibly the son of Samuel Batman and baptised on 30 January 1739/40 at St Mary, Bitton, Gloucestershire. The parish register records:
Janry ... 30th Willm. Saml. John & Philip Sons of Saml. Batman[1]
He was a carpenter in Bitton.[2] He married Martha Clear on 26 December 1756 at Bitton.[3]
He was buried at Bitton on 30 April 1815. The burial register records: "William Batman [Abode] Oldland [When buried] April 30 1815 [Age] 87 yrs."[4]
He left a will dated 17 September 1810.[2] His will refers to:
- his wife Martha
- his sons William (crossed out), George, Aaron and Moses
- his daughter Hannah, the wife of George Hale, shopkeeper, of the City of Bristol
- his daughter Mary, the wife of Isaac Johnson, coal miner, of the parish of Bitton
- the children of his deceased son Solomon
- his grandson, Charles Bateman, son of his deceased son Nathan
His will was proved on 12 June 1815 by his widow Martha Bateman.[2]

Battman-46 and Batman-184 appear to represent the same person because: Both profiles are for the William Batman/Battman/Bateman who was buried in Bitton, Gloucestershire in 1815. Both profiles have the same spouse and children. The father was unlikely to be Stanton Battman of Redcliffe, Bristol, as his son William died in infancy. The father is possibly Samuel Battman of Bitton, Gloucesterhisre as shown in Batman-184.
