Europe Bates, a former slave, applied for and earned land under the Homestead Act in Amite County, Mississippi. His family later donated a portion of the land for a school for African American Children which took the name, The Europe Bates School.[1]
Europe was born in 1834 in Mississippi. His parents are unknown but census records state that they, also, were born in Mississippi.
On the 1870 census he is in a household with Vicey (Allen) Bates [2] and children: Sallie (1860), Howell (1862), and Ellen (May 1870). On the 1880 census Sallie had married and left the household and a young daughter, Susan (1872) has been added.
Europe Bates was issued a patent for 165 acres in Amite County, Mississippi on September 15, 1883. [3] "His improvements included one dwelling, one corn crib, a cotton house, shop, kitchen and, two small cabins."[1]
On February 15, 1894 he married Mrs. Eliza Jackson in Amite County, Mississippi[4]. Europe and Eliza are together on the 1900 census, still in Amite County. There are three step-children and two grandsons in their household.
A school for African American children was opened in Amite County in the late 1800s and was named in his honor, The Europe Bates School, his family having donated the land.[1] The school was" a small, white, wood-frame, eight-room country school with a stage for class performances" [5]
Europe Bates died in 1910 in Amite County, Mississippi and is buried in the Bates Cemetery.[1]
