Biography

Sampson Bastian was born in Chewton, Victoria, Australia in 1871. Sam's father, also Sampson, was born in Crowan, Cornwall and his mother Sarah Jane was born in New York, United States, her parents Henry and Hannah were originally from Canada.

In the 1890's, Sam and his brother's Henry and Archie, and his uncle Sampson Cook had moved to the Western Australian Goldfields. They set up Bastian Brothers in Daydawn in the Murchison District and had various interests in different mining ventures. There are numerous newspaper articles in the archives about their business. There is a photo of Bastian Brothers store front in one of the newspapers.

The Bastian family had mining in their blood, as they had originated from Cornwall where many of the copper miners that migrated to Australia came from. The different Bastian brothers and also some cousins, also mined in many different parts of Western Australia, Mt Magnet, Coolgardie, Big Bell, and Boulder to name a few.

When their father Sampson Bastian died in 1902, the rest of the family moved from Victoria to Western Australia. Sam's brother Henry bought a block of land, No 16 St Albans Avenue, Highgate in 1903 and all the brothers helped to build a house there for their mother Sarah Jane, which still stands today. Sam made the trip back to Victoria in 1903 to marry his sweetheart, Milliie Johns and they resided in Western Australia from that point forward. Millie also had a brother Phil Johns and sister Esther Dickenson that moved to Western Australia. Sam and his wife Millie lived in Gardiner Street, East Perth for many years.
