Biography

Elijah was born in about 1710. Son of Joseph and Rachel Barton.^[1]

He married first, Oct 17, 1736, bond dated 30 August, MARGARET CARMAN, died before 1750.^[2][1] Children by Margaret, order uncertain:

1. John, perhaps b. in 1738.
2. SUSAN, b. in 1740; d. in 1825 (N. Y. City Death Records).
3. MARGARET, b. about 1742; d. before 1780; possibly second wife of Capt. JAMES DENTON, M. 3 Feb. 1759.

Elijah married second, June 24, 1750, SARAH SMITH, died in 1795-7, daughter of Hannah Smith.^[1] Children with Sarah:

1. ELIZABETH, h. about 1753, m. 17 Dec. 1778 EPHRAIM LUDLOW.
2. ELIJAH Barton b. about 1757; m. CHARITY CORNELL
3. ANN, M. at St. Georges, Hempstead, 2 Sept. 1784, HENRY BALDWIN (N. Y. Gen. & Bor. Rec. 15.177).
4. BENIAH(?), loyalist, of Flushing, b. in 1757; d. in New York City 21 Feb. 1816, act. 59.
5. ELISHA(?) BARTON II, m. SARAH BALDWIN, bapt. in Hempstead 20 March 1758 ^[3], daughter of Isaac Balding of Poughkeepsie, will dated 10 Oct. 1787, probated 1791,

Elijah was of Brooklyn in 1750 and 1756 (^[4]. He is probably the man who votes on sending representatives from Queens to Congress on, respectively, 7 Nov. 1775 and 19 Jan. 1776, are listed by Mather ^[5].^[1]

In Jamaica Town Records ^[6] appears an Elijah Barton on 26 April 1738 and 1 May 1746. Elijah Barton is listed in 1790 in North Hempstead, one male above 16, one female only. And he deeded property to his son Elijah on Oct 6, 1795 ^[7]; in his Will dated March 28, 1797, which was probated May 5, 1798 ^[8]. The Will also mentions grandson Elisha Barton III.^[1]

Elijah was the only child of his father to remain on Long Island. He died between March 28, 1797 and May 5, 1798.^[1][9][10]
