Biography

Gilford was born January 26, 1840. He was the son of Willis Barton and Margaret Nancy Martin. He married Nancy Jane Haynes, but he didn't marry Nancy Jane Weaver. The Nancy Jane Weaver was information from some very old family trees and no documentation has been found to substantiate it.

Winston County citizens had divided sympathies between the North and the South. Gilford and his brothers (Jonathan, James, Madison, and William), along with two brothers-in-law (Francis Harris, and Jesse Hyde) joined the 1st Alabama Cavalry, Union Army. Other family members also joined the Union Army, but in different units.

According to his military papers, Gilford was 6 feet tall with a fair complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair. He enlisted in the Union Army 9-26-1860.

[A census index has Gilford's middle initial as 'T,' but after double-checking the film [1], the T is actually a 7. The census taker is keeping some sort of record and has 7-8/14 beside Gilford's name so that the 7 looks a little like the middle initial T.

Gilford is buried at Sardis #1 Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Lynn, Winston County, Alabama.^[3]
