● Text of newspaper article describing Henry's death as a suicide: [2]
"Suicide -- On Tuesday of last week, about 10 o'clock, Mr. Henry Barton, a resident of Graceham, near this place, ended his existence in this world by placing a revolver to his right side just above the hip, and firing it off, the ball lodging in the stomach. He had been to this town a short time before, and after making some purchases started for home, stopping at a house on the road where he had frequently visited. On having some slight difficulty with the woman in the house about some money he had advanced, he left the house, went across the road to a fence corner and committed the act above mentioned. After firing the shot Dr. Zimmerman, who resides in close proximity, was hastily summoned and made an examination wound which he at once pronounced fatal. After considerable probing the ball was finally found. He was then taken to his home in Graceham where he received every attention until the following day when death relieved him of his sufferings. His funeral took place on Thursday in the cemetery at this place and was largely attended. He was aged about 60 years and leaves a wife and several grown children. Mr. Barton a few years ago bore an exemplary character and was comfortably well off, but unfortunately he allowed himself to fall into several bad habits which finally ended in his death. He was a brother of our respected townsman, Mr. Isaac Barton."
● Partial text of a biographical sketch: [3]
"Henry Barton, son of Samuel and Amy (McWilliams) Barton, was the father of William A. Barton. He was born on the Monocacy, in Frederick County, and secured a common school education. He learned the trade of a steelsmith under his brother, Thomas, who had served his apprenticeship in Philadelphia. He carried on his business at the foot of Blue Ridge, between Thurmont and Mount St. Mary's College. Mr. Barton in later years purchased a farm of 125 acres near his old home, and carried on farming until his death on this place in 1878. He had an edge tool shop on his farm. In politics, he was a Democrat. He held membership in the Reformed Church. Mr. Barton was married to Sobina Young, of near what is now Apple's Church. She was a daughter of Henry and Annie (Leatherman) Young. Her death occurred in 1880, and she was a member of the Reformed Church. Mr. and Mrs. Barton were the parents of six children: William A., our subject; John N.; James M., lives at Boonsboro, Washington County, Md.; Margaret Ann, married to J.L. [Research Note: A family member provided some data regarding a U.S. Navy career for William Henry Barton in which he advanced from Acting Midshipman to Lieutenant Commander from 1856 to 1866 and served aboard a number of ships. That data does not seem consistent with Henry's family structure or with other records that are part of this profile, and it probably pertains to another person with the same name. Any additional info to help reconcile this would be appreciated.]
