Biography

General

I'm a retiree who joined WikiTree and began doing genealogy research in early 2012. I'm the Profile Manager (or a co-manager) for profiles in the Barton-Kefauver-Masters-Flook portion of the worldwide family tree. Other surnames that are represented in this portion of the tree include Boyer/Beyer, Buhrman/Poorman, Cline, Coblentz, Ferguson, Fogle, Gladhill, House, Jacobs, McClain, Meister, Mumma, and Renn. In the time I have been here, my ancestral lines have intersected in multiple places with those of other researchers, and I have discovered some new cousins. So some of these profiles are shared with other site members and with other families.

The Barton surname is of English origin, ^{[1] [2]} but there are several branches in my family ancestry with German roots as well. My autosomal DNA test results say that my ethnicity is 99% European, consisting of 67% West and Central Europe, 27% British Isles, and 5% Southeast Europe, with a trace of Asia Minor. In the United States, the geographic area with the greatest concentration of ancestors encompasses the counties of Franklin and Adams in Pennsylvania and the counties of Washington and Frederick in Maryland. Many of my more recent ancestors and collateral relatives lived most or all of their lives in those counties.

Notable Ancestors?

I have been asked several times about my relationship to Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross, and to former U.S. Senator Estes Kefauver, who shared my mother's maiden surname. I have not traced my ancestry to either, but the WikiTree Relationship Finder tool, redesigned in mid-2021, tells me that Clara (Clarissa, to be accurate) is my 18th cousin once removed and Estes is my 15th cousin twice removed. Interestingly, in both cases the relationship would be through my maternal grandmother, Nora Flook, not through the Barton or Kefauver lines as you might expect. I have not attempted to verify all the connections that help to establish those relationships, so the analysis should not be taken as gospel at this point. And as the site data base expands, and more historical profiles are entered, other paths may be found that would change the conclusion.

The redesigned Relationship Finder tool finds many other relationships to historical figures and notable people as well. But again, some of the connections that support them may be suspect, and I have not attempted to verify them, so at this point I am not comfortable claiming any notable ancestors. I'm pretty confident that the ancestry you see here is correct for all my lines from five to seven generations back, but beyond that, more research is still needed.

Advance Directive

WikiTree policy ^[5] states that upon the death of a member, any Private profiles managed by the member will be deleted unless another member has been designated to assume management of the profiles. As of this writing I have no close family members who have joined WikiTree and could step up to adopt profiles, but I manage only a few Private profiles. Of those, I believe that it's only my own profile that does not have another member included on the trusted list, so I would like to have as little of that data as possible deleted. Those profiles that can be retained may be orphaned, as necessary, and made available to any interested site member.

Note that I have not copyrighted any text or photos in the profiles I manage, or otherwise made any attempt to protect or control any of the public data. I don't intend to profit from this activity, and my desire is to have the information in a public place, remaining freely available to all family members, relatives, and other interested parties, including those of future generations. And I want others to feel welcome to make any additions or corrections to my work that may be appropriate. I hope the information will endure long after my death, and that other interested family members can use it as a baseline to be enhanced and expanded as opportunities arise.

I also hope that I can contribute, in my own small way, to cleaning up some of the questionable ancestry documentation that has proliferated since the advent of genealogy on the web. Toward that end, I am working steadily to try to update and fully source some of my own early profiles that are not exactly in showcase condition. You may see data on other genealogy sites that has come from here, and I welcome those who participate in other web sites or genealogy platforms to incorporate information found here, as appropriate. I ask only that you provide credit where credit is due. I believe I have extended that same courtesy to others from whom I have obtained information, data, or photos.
