1840 DEATH NOTICE "DIED, at his residence, in McLean county, on the 2d instant, Gen. JOSEPH BARTHOLOMEW, aged 74 years. Gen. B. was a native of Pennsylvania and emigrated at an early age to the State of Indiana, where he resided until a few years past. He commanded one of the divisions of the army at the battle of Tippecanoe, and the courage and military skill evinced by him on that occasion were highly lauded by Gen. Harrison in his despatches. He was twice elected a member of the House of Representatives, and once a member of the Senate of Indiana, and was one of the Commissioners who located the seat of government at Indianapolis. He was also on the electoral ticket which gave the vote of Indians to Mr. Monroe. The estimation in which he was held there, is manifested by the fact that an important county in the State bears his name. For several years he has resided about 15 miles from Bloomington, McLean co., in this State. At the celebration of the anniversary of the battle of Tippecanoe, on the battle ground, in May last, Gen. Bartholomew was selected by the old soldiers of Harrison to preside over their deliberations, and during the whole of the recent political struggle, he sided with the people. No man, in all the relations of life, was more generally esteemed, or performed his official duties with more honor to himself or satisfaction to the public."[1]
