Biography

Henry Barrows was born on 24 Feb 1876 in New Haven, Oswego, New York. He was the son of Bailey Barrows and Orissa Wing.

Throughout his life, Henry worked as a laborer. He started out as a farm laborer in the rural community that he was born in, and then worked at various businesses when he moved to the city of Syracuse.

Henry seems to have shared a close relationship with his brother, Gilbert Barrows, as he was enumerated in Gilbert's household from 1905 through 1915. Even after his first marriage, Henry continued to live with Gilbert, as it was Gilbert's address that was provided when his wife passed away in December 1918.

The apartment that they rented at 107 Fabius Street, Syracuse, New York may have been owned by their brother, Bleaker; given that it was Bleaker's wife, Amy, who had listed the upstairs flat for rent in June of 1917.

Henry, age 39, married [1st] Teressa Sarah Nelson (nee Stewart), age 23, on 6 Sep 1915 in Scriba, Oswego, New York. Teressa was a young widow, who may have already had a child from her first marriage (Mary, born in early 1914) that Henry claimed as his own. Their son, Henry Gilbert Barrows, was born on 11 Sep 1917, and they called him "Percy".

Sadly, Teressa passed away on 9 Dec 1918; and Henry passed away less than 7 years later. Their children, Mary and Henry Barrows, would be raised by Henry's second wife, Margaret.

Henry married [2nd] Margaret Flemming nee Fitzgibbons about 1920. Margaret was born in Scotland. She had 4 children from her first marriage.

Henry passed away on 6 Jun 1925 in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York.[1] He was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Syracuse.[2]

Death Announcement

Details of his passing were published in the local paper: "HENRY BARROWS STRICKEN AT WORK IN MUNICIPAL BATH - Collapses While Firing Boiler Shortly Before Noon - HEART WAS WEAK - Heat Victim Previously Suffered Cardiac Trouble... One more victim has been added to the list of Syracusans dead from the extreme heat which has held this city in a relentless grip for six days. Henry Barrows, 48, 129 Fabius St., died almost immediately while firing his boiler at the Municipal Bath Saturday shortly after noon. He had been employed at the bath a year and was in the boiler room alone when overcome. William Herb, another employee, chancing to pass the door saw Barrows huddled on the floor and went to him. He was dead before he could be brought to open air. He had suffered previously from cardiac troubles. Mr. Barrows is survived by his widow, Mrs. Margaret Barrows; one daughter, Mary, and one son, Henry; three step-daughters, Christine, Margaret and Agnes Fleming".[3]

Census Enumerations

1905 New Haven, Oswego, New York Henry (age 29) was staying with his brother, Gilbert Barrows at the time of this census. He was engaged in the profession of farming.[4]
1910 Scriba, Oswego, New York Henry (age 34) was living with his brother, Gilbert, in Scriba. Henry worked as a laborer on a dairy farm, most likely on the dairy farm that Gilbert operated.[5]
1920 Syracuse, Onondaga, New York Henry was working in the trucking department of a gear factory at this point in time. He lived with his second wife, Margaret, in an apartment at 129 Fabius Street. Although his two-year-old son, "Percy" (ie. Henry), was enumerated in the home with them, his daughter, Mary, was not. Margaret's 3 children, Christine, Agnes and Margaret Flemming; and Margaret's elderly mother, Margaret Fitzgibbons, also lived in the home; as well as two boarders with the Fitzgibbon's surname, who were most likely related to Margaret in some way.[6]

Research Notes

  • It is curious that Henry was identified as "James William Henry Barrows" in his marriage record as this is the only time that he was ever identified in records as anything other than "Henry". Occasionally, Henry was documented with a "W" or a "J" as his middle initial, so it is possible that Henry's formal name was James William Henry Barrows. Yet, his WWI draft registration record indicates that he did not have a middle name.
  • Teressa was identified as "Beatrice Nelson" in her son Henry's social security file. Although this is likely an error that resulted from his never having really known her, it is interesting that she was also referred to as "Beatrice" on her husband's WWI Draft Registration card.[7]
