Frances "Fannie" Barrier Williams was an African American educator and civil rights activist. She was among the founders of the NAACP and the first Black woman inducted as a member of the Chicago Woman's Club.[1]
Fannie Barrier was born in 1855 in New York. She was the daughter of Anthony and Harriet Barrier.
In the 1860 census Francis (age 6) was in Sweden, Monroe, New York, United States.[2]
In the 1870 census Fannie (age 16) was in Sweden, Monroe, New York, United States.[3]
Fannie attended the New England Conservatory of Music and the School of Fine Arts in Washington, D.C. She taught school in Washington, DC [4] before marrying attorney Samuel Laing Williams in Brockport, New York, in 1887. [5][6]After their marriage they moved to Chicago where both became leaders in the African-American community.
Fannie was widowed in 1921. She passed away in 1944 at her home in Rochester, New York[7] and was buried in High Street Cemetery in Brockport, New York. She was survived by a sister and a niece.
