Harrison Barrett was a former slave who established the community in Harris County, Texas that became known as "Barrett's Settlement". Beginning with seven houses, the community grew to include additional homes, farms, and businesses. Considered the leader of the community, Barrett established a school, church, and cemetery. [1][2]
Harrison was born in 1845 in Titus County, Texas. Harrison was the son of Simon and Eliza Barrett. The family were all slaves of Calvin Barrett in Gray Rock, Titus County, Texas in 1860.[3]
Harrison married Annie Johns prior to 1870; in 1880 the family was living in Harris County, Texas with 6 children.[4][5]
Harrison was sold to the Barber family in Mont Belvieu, Texas before 1865. After emancipation, he gathered his family that remained in Titus County and brought them all to his land in Barrett Station, where they established an African-American community there.
He passed away in 1917. He was buried in Barrett Cemetery in Barrett.[6]
