Biography

Richard Barnes when about 10 years old, came to this country with his mother and grandmother Agnes Bent both of whom died on the passage. [1] [2] [3]

He was baptized on Feb. 20, 1631 in Penton-Grafton. (p. 66) [4]

His mother, who was the widow Agnes (Bent) Barnes, had married second, Thomas Blanchard who came with them from Penton England to New England in 1639 on the ship Jonathan. [2] (p. 410)[5]

  • 1647: 1 mo: 7d: Court allowed John Grout as guardian for Richard Barnes. (V. 1:p. 13) [6]
  • 1649: 1 mo: 7d: John Grout/Groute of Sudbury, as his guardian enters an agreement with John Bent. (V. 1:p. 7) [6][3]

Richard resided with hls uncle John Bent in Sudbury, and in 1657 they removed to Marlborough. [2]

In the County Court held at Cambridge In 1662 Richard was plaintiff against Thomas Blanchard for withholding the money 20L, given him by his mother while she was a widow. He gained his suit. (p. 407-12)[5][2] [3] ( V.1: p. 18/19) [6]

He and his sister (sic ?cousin) Elizabeth had bequests from their grandmother. [2][3]

He settled in Marlborough and shared In the first division of the lands in 1660. [2]

  • 1660: Settled at the new plantation of Marlborough. [7]
  • 1661: April : He was among the three men who agreed with the town to build a frame house for the minister. [7]
  • 1664: Seventeen men of Marlborough petitioned the General Court, to appoint a committee to settle disputes in the town regarding their ministry, the taking of properties for non-payment of tax or for not improving those lands, and other issues. Richard Barnes was one of the men who opposed this petition and appointment. [7]
  • 1675: Oct. 1: As a frontier town, and fearing attack by Indians, men of the town, Richard Barnes among them, voted to establish and maintain eight garrison's as protection. [7]
  • 1686: Oct. 29: The proprietors of the Indian plantation 'Ockoocangansett', voted to survey that land and it eventually became part of Marlborough. Richard Barnes was one of the men voted to survey the land and lay out the lots and highways. [7]
  • 1702: After the death of their minister, some townsmen attempted to install Rev. Mr. John Emerson, but he declined the invitation due to disputes among the townsfolk, somewhat equally divided. Both Richard Barnes Sr. and Jr. were listed in support of Rev. Emerson. [7]

He married at Marlborough on Dec 16, 1667, Deborah Dix [8], daughter of Edward and Jane (Wilkinson) Dix who had come from England to Watertown. [2]

His wife Deborah died at Marlborough on Jan. 20, 1689. [8]

He married secondly, Elizabeth ___ (? Stimpson [9]), named in his will. (Case1119: p. 1-12)[10]

Richard Barnes died at Marlborough Jan. 22, 1707/8. [8] [3].

He died intestate, and his son Richard Jr. presented his inventory to the Courts. In the partial settlement of the estate dated Feb. 9, 1708, the following are mentioned:

  • his widow Elizabeth
  • son Richard
  • son Edward
  • daughter Deborah Barnes
  • daughter Abigail Bent and her husband Peter Bent
  • daughter Sarah Dix of Hartford and her husband John Dix[10]

9-15-2015 Since name spelling is not quite the same and no other info is available except marriage to Dix we beg the source of the info because checking the source will show more exact info as to place, names, and dates. where did you find the vitals? B Barnes
