Biography

Howell was born in 1750 was the son of John Barker

Martha Patsy Clanton b. about 1753 in Virginia was his wife.

(Thank you to lcarrollp123 for this info.)

They lived first in Lincoln County, NC. He and Martha acquired a large plantation, many slaves, a large family, and a busy life marked by the industry and hospitality of that era.
Before the American Revolution, the family religion had been Church of England, as evidenced by Barker records in several Virginia Parishes. In North Carolina, they became Methodists and "Barker's Congregation" appears in the first extant Minutes of the Iredell Circuit in 1823, with Howell Barker as class leader.
Barker's Congregation became Barker's Grove Methodist Church. That church is no longer standing and has been replaced by Barker's Grove Baptist Church. Remnants of the old cemetery are still there, but it is in bad condition.
