Hi Doug,

Thanks for taking responsibility for the Orphaned Profiles. This After Adopting Orphans FAQ explains the special attention adopted profiles will sometimes need from their profile managers. One quick way to find the profiles you adopted is by searching your Contributions List for the word "adopted" and "manager." You can find a quick link to your Contributions List in the My WikiTree dropdown menu.

Let me know if you have any questions on how to find and record sources, merge duplicates, clean up GEDCOM biographies, and interpret the Suggestions report. I'm here to help!

Debi

PS If you have any GEDCOM cleanup to do, there is a new tool that can help. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.

Thank you Debi - I think the very most important thing I need to learn is properly cite/find supporting sources. I have a fair amount of personal knowledge, and I am aware many sources exist, but I have not quite learned the process for getting and applying them to my tree acurately.

Thanks, Doug

Hi Doug,

The most important thing to remember when citing a source is to tell all the bits that would help someone else find the source so that they can evaluate the evidence. That means it needs to include information about what happened, where it happened, the date on which it happened, the names of the people involved as they appear in the record, and where you found the record.

If you are using FamilySearch.org for records, they usually provide a paragraph of document information in the right column on the details page. FindAGrave has a "view source" link beside the memorial number that will take you to a prepared citation. Ancestry provides source information but it often needs to have information added regarding the who, what, when, where portion. All of those citations are suggestions and can be edited to add information, clean up the formatting, etc.

We have a program to help you learn how to create biographies that honor your ancestors, including how to cite the sources you have and how to find more. If you are interested, you can find out more about that on the Profile Improvements Project (PIP) Voyage page.

If you have a specific source that you'd like to see an example of, let me know and I'll track one down.
