Someone has shifted the death dates of the likely 3 consecutive generations of James Barbour, assigning this one a death date of when his father's will was proved in Culpeper Co., and also likely mis-labelling him James II (so, we were missing James 1 1/2, his father, conflated with his grandfather by Dr. Phillip Slaughter). Also, THIS James Barbour (maybe III, maybe IV, maybe we don't know so shouldn't number them) & wife Frances Throckmorton, and his younger brother Ambrose Barbour & wife Catherine Thompson & others, lived on land that fell into Madison County, Virginia when founded in December 1792 (Mordecai was in Culpeper but has some deeds in recorded Madison). James Barbour appears on the tax list in Madison Co. and land records as Col. James Barber, probably a county level appointment https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS3L-73TF-H?cat=1131688, but you'll want to look there for his family's records after 1792. Here is a deed from James & Frances "of Madison Co." to their son Thomas dated 24 Oct 1793. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L9PH-YBL?i=240&cat=376757
